Of websites and things

Time, as it is wont to do, is moving on. And although I have precisely no time, I’m going to tell you about a few things I’d like to do with the Wibsite. Maybe by posting this here I’ll find some time to actually do some of this. Here’s my might-do list:

  1. Fix the login thing so you don’t have to log in again to use the boards.
  2. Create some form of advertising system so that those Wibloggers who wish to support the running of the Wibsite can put some unobtrusive adverts on their blogs. No pressure at all.
  3. Potentially redesiging the site. I get the feeling, though I may be wrong, that the way the main Wibsite looks doesn’t “feel” right. It was a radical departure from the old look, but maybe too radical. Some feedback on that would be appreciated.
  4. Think of a point number four.

So, is there anything else you’d like to see? Consider this a call for agenda items for the Wibsite Parishoners Annual General Meeting.

The Wibsite Parishioners Annual General Meeting is now in session:

    Hi Chris,
thanks for keeping us posted… I’d be happy to include advertising on my wiblog – as this is a family friendly site, i’m sure the advertisers would be family-oriented as well. I remember you mentioned needing to switch over to a new updated software system as recommended by the hosting company, which I’m sure wasn’t an inexpensive upgrade.

I have to say, I do miss the old page of avatars w/ all of them mashed together alphabetically – I still haven’t caught on to the new system of finding people’s blogs and new posts, etc. I feel like I’ve lost connection somehow…

A consistent system to let us know when a new wiblogger joins would be nice-and-welcoming too.

For some reason, I feel the old format was much more “this is who we are as evidenced by our roots” with links to where you all started from, links to your & Dave’s work… donno, just seemed more familiar/comfortable. The new homepage is very fancy and sleak…yet perhaps that’s why it may not be fitting just right?

The “this just in” was fun – to highlight a story/project/idea/especially-interesting-wiblog-post…community-like. The boards’ accessibility was really nice… as was the wibsite google search feature, too.

On a totally selfish note, would it be possible to include the ‘rainy day’ theme again? there are currently so many wonderful theme choices to choose from! although sometimes it’s nice to feel at home…it was just so fitting before 🙂

    here’s a link to the old wibsite.com version: http://wibsite.stillbreathing.co.uk/wibblethorpe/

Thank you for everything you do!

  2. Low priority, but I would like it very much if the video playing thingy doodah were updated to the new version that lets us embed flickr videos in our posts.

I agree about point 3. I think the sudden loss of whimsy was a bit disconcerting (well for me it was, but I don’t adapt to change very well – would you believe that my church had the sermon at the BEGINNING of the service instead of the end the other day?!). The new website is very pretty indeed, but is very non-whimsical.

  3. Thinking of a point number four will be a good distraction from actually doing any work – I shall get on the case forthwith!

Re #3, it looks fine to me – no complaints from moi at any rate 🙂

  4. Happy to run (unobtrusive) adverts to help support the site, if they are appropriate. Not sure what I mean by appropriate, yet, I think it’s one of those “I’ll know inappropriate adverts when I see them,” instances.

As for a point (4), can you design a widget that when you press it causes the CD drawer to slide out and chocolate to appear? Or a stats plug-in, whichever is easier?

  5. I think you’re doing a great job … but then I’m a person who doesn’t actually care how a car works just as long as it goes when I turn the key (which is not to say I don’t know how to do my own car maintenance! … just that I’m not interested in how or why just do) … I admire those who can and like it though 🙂

  6. Oh mine wasn’t a complaint! It was just a comment! I don’t really mind, and I’ve adjusted to the new one now :p

  7. I’m afraid I know so little about these things I can’t contribute anything sensible. Simplicity is all I need (or a hand to hold).

  8. I disagree with JTL. Mainly on principal 😉

Actually I’d prefer something a little closer to the old Wibsite. Is there anything that can be done to enable us to open multiple wiblogs to read?

Point 4: I think that the Wibsite should form a plan to unite the various Heretical Believers – everyone but me – out there into the One True Church – i.e. whichever one I decide is…

  9. Of course, point number 4 was the new statistics package. I hadn’t forgotten. Much.

The thing which keeps niggling at my tiny mind is this design issue. From your comments I see that I’m right to suspect the current design is not quite right for us. Yay nailed the hammer on her head by describing the old site as “whimsical”. Maybe the Wibsite needs an injection of Whims. Jack and possibly others see nothing wrong with the current design, so maybe a halfway house could be constructed. Hmm, web designer thought processes happening…

Of course, it would be marvellous if Dave could donate or even draw some things that I could make a design out of, but he’s a busy man and frankly I’m not sure I can afford him any more. Still, I’ll point him to this discussion.

Some of your other suggestions (and things which have been mentioned in the past) like the newer video plugin could be done quite quickly – I’ll try to make time for those.

“This Just In”: it would be great for any Wiblogger to be able to suggest items for inclusion. I’ll see if I can figure that out.

Do you think this should go in the boards as a kind of New-Wibsite-almost-6-month-review?
